Rescue as a Verb, to
save
from a dangerous or distressing situation. Rescue as a Noun, is an act
of saving or being saved from danger. Now in today’s society we use this
term so loosely when it comes to helping animals.
Now I know that there are dogs and cats out there in the USA that are
being held in deplorable situations by some hideous people. As rescues
come and go here in the states mostly we end up helping dogs that are
being given up by their owners and pulling
them from shelters where owners have dumped them or they have been
picked up as strays. Mostly we do not do real rescue we re-home animals. The distressing
situation is from the owner who want the animal gone and make themselves
feel good about it. I take in many of these dogs to help re-home them, I do not feel like I do real rescue I just re-home dogs. I
feel like I make a lot of folks feel good about what they have decided
to do. I hold no judgments about these things I just help find homes for
these dogs. Don’t get me wrong they all need help. What I
lose sleep over is the fact that in this world there are animals that
really need to be rescued. I have had my eyes opened and now can no long
look the other way. It is the same as people who have always gotten
their pets in a pet store and find out how the
pets get to the store to be sold. They do not go back to the pet store
to buy another pet. When our eyes are opened and we learn the truth we
cannot look the other way. As my eyes get opened to the horrid truth of
animals around the world how can I just look
the other way and pretend that it does not exist. We see the wild
animals of Africa being slaughtered for their skin and other body parts.
We see them being exploited and sold to USA and other industrial
countries where the rich uncaring people who seek them
are. We watch these ugly happening on TV and say what can I do. Then do
nothing. I am as guilty of this as any one. But now I cannot I must try
to help. I cannot save an Elephant in Africa but I can save a dog in
Peru. I cannot save the world. But I can re-home
dogs in United States. I cannot go to sleep every night knowing I did
nothing to help rescue, (to
save
from a dangerous or distressing situation) dogs that I know how to help.
I do not know how to save wild animals from Africa but I do know how to
save the Cultural, historical hairless dogs of
Peru. One at a time seem almost insignificant but I am one person and
if we all do one thing we can make a difference. We take our one vote
and go to the polls every four years to make a difference. This is how
things are done on a large scale one at
a time. Yes this country has plenty of homeless helpless dogs and cats
we also have hundreds and hundreds of rescue/shelters and a government
that makes laws that help us help them. When we look at the situations
of poor countries where the people can hardly
help themselves and governments that have not made laws to help the
animals of their countries, do we just say it’s not our problems. We did
not always save and rescue the helpless homeless pets of this country.
We left them outside to fend for themselves we killed them and treated
them as they were a reread new paper, unwanted and tossed out. As animal
lovers across this country saw the truth and realized how disgusting
and deplorable this was. They started to change by educating and working
independently, then together to open shelters and start rescues. To get
politicians and corporations educated and involved. We did not just
wake up and have this fall in our laps many folks over the years made
our country aware. The media helped bring the awareness to the forefront
and take the hideousness out of darkness and put it in the light for
all to see. I was born in a world where women of the USA could not buy
a home or get equal pay for the same job that a man done. I was forced
to have sex to keep a job. I am proud to say I burned my bra in front of
the capital. I leave my a legacy to the young women of today who will
never know that time. I did not do this alone a whole generation of
women came together and made our voices heard. I will not look the other
way because I live in a country that has already has gone through what many
countries have still to do. I can not say its not my problem because we
have homeless dogs in the United States, we also have shelters and
rescues that are out there picking up the slack and the thousands of
dogs and cats that don't get a second chance we will euthanize to be
humane. Yes it is something I hope will not be needed in my life time
but I know it will. But to see the dogs that are just left behind
because the people have no home and the shelters they have built to live
in get tore down and they are sent away the animal are left behind to
fend for themselves and exposed to the elements and starvation.
The few
people who care and try are not enough, they do what they can but its
never is enough. I know there are many who do not believe as I do. It's
not for me to change the world but to pray my voice gets heard for the
animals of the counties that have not developed a way to save there
animals and pets. I'm not asking for money I asking that you spread the
word educate get involved. One dog, one animal, one child it all starts
small.
I
do not speak Spanish but use the on line translators to help aid me in
the discovery of the
plight of these dogs that I know how to help but
can not get them to the USA to help. As I write this I am following the
rescue of many dogs that are left out in the cold, rubble and barren area
where the people were forced to leave and the dogs got left behind. The
small group of people lead by a woman who loves these dogs and tries to
help, had to ask for permission to help get to the dogs. She took a 5
hour taxi ride to help feed and rescue the dogs The dogs being afraid
had to be tranquillized so they could get the adults. using chicken
laced with tranquillizers was her only means but as some fell asleep she
then had to leave because the area became unsafe when the drug addicts
and thieves arrived. She will go again this time she hopes to have a tranquillizer
dart gun so she can get them quicker. She left food for them but it is
too dangerous to go with out police escort. The food will not
last and she wants to get more puppies the next time she goes. So we just
look the other way when people put their lives on the line to help dogs.
